OUR COACHES

NOVICE, MID-DISTANCE, LONG DISTANCE

NOVICE COACH

SUSAN

Susan has been hanging around the water since her early teens when she started sailing.  She raced sailboats in college and continued to compete in PHRF  sailing after graduating.  Introduced to outrigger canoe paddling in 2018, it quickly became a passion. Susan became a steersperson, began to assist with novice practices and eventually directed some women’s practices with the excellent mentorship of other WBOCC coaches. She is excited and honored to be a novice coach this year.

MEN'S COACH

Jarrod Covington

With roots in small-town Beaufort NC, his passion for everything aquatic and nature lead to a business of sharing these experiences. Find him kitesurfing, surfing, paddling, creeping through a swamp, tickling a fiddler crab or telling jokes with a blue heron.

WOMEN'S COACH

BERNADETTE

Bernadette began paddling with Dana Outrigger Canoe Club in Dana Point CA in 2007. She has completed the US Championships, Catalina Crossing, 8 times, placing 3rd overall in 2012, and the Na Wahine O Ke Kai the same year. Bernadette moved back to her home state of North Carolina and is a founding member of WBOCC. She steered the 2019 Catalina Crossing with the WBOCC ladies team. Bernadette hopes to continue to help grow the love and knowledge of outrigger canoeing on the east coast.

Coach Led Practices

Beginner paddlers are required to come to Novice Practices initially to learn technique, and canoe skills. We supply all novice training with loan of club paddles and pfd’s.
